A veteran of the Fort Worth Police was detained and arrested on suspicion of DWI early Monday morning. According to a Fort Worth Star-Telegram article, the officer is a veteran, and has been on the force 17 years. Currently, the officer works in the bike unit. Shortly after midnight on Monday morning, Haltom City Police pulled the officer over for a traffic violation.Following a DWI investigation and arrest, he was put on restricted duty and released on $1,000 bail. The Fort Worth Police said in a press release that the officer has been suspended pending the outcome of the case, and that his badge and gun have been confiscated. The officer consented to a blood sample, although these results are not public.

Fort Worth Police Dept.—Once Haunted by Officer DWI

Before Monday, 522 days had passed with zero officer DWI arrests. This was more than halfway toward the department’s stated goal of 1,000 days. On the first January day of 2013, Police Chief Jeff Halstead began counting days. He even installed a dry erase board outside his office, tallying the days that passed without the arrest of an officer for DWI.

Several years ago, the Fort Worth Police had to deal with a series of officer arrests for DWI and the accompanying negative publicity. Finally, Chief Halstead rolled out a zero-tolerance policy. Regardless of and before a criminal disposition, any police officer whose DWI is sustained by internal affairs would be terminated. By far the most scandalous and tragic event happened in 2010, in which a car driven by an intoxicated former narcotics officer crashed, resulting in the death of a twenty seven year old mother. The former Fort Worth Police Officer was convicted of intoxication manslaughter and sent to prison for the maximum sentence of 20 years.
